Information event on proposed green hydrogen project in Bridgend

Renewable energy specialist Marubeni Europower is holding a public information event to update the local community on its plans for the HyBont green hydrogen production and refuelling facility at Brynmenyn Industrial Estate, before submitting a planning application later this month.

It is anticipated that the green hydrogen facility will help support Bridgend County Borough Council’s net zero strategy by providing low carbon fuel to be used locally, for its refuse collection vehicles and operators of local buses. The Council is also exploring the potential for an Ynysawdre heat network, which would provide a low carbon and cost-effective way to heat local schools and community facilities.

Following the pre-application consultation for planning on the project, which took place in December last year, Marubeni Europower is holding a public information event to provide an update on the plans and provide feedback on the consultation and queries raised.

The public information event is taking place from 12.45pm-6.45pm on Thursday
9 March 2023 at Ynysawdre Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre, Heol yr Ysgol, Tondu, CF32 9E.

George Dodd, Senior Vice-President at Marubeni Europower, said:

“We’ve had a lot of interest in our plans for the HyBont green hydrogen project. Although hydrogen production is not a new concept, we appreciate it is new to the area and it is important that local residents and businesses have an opportunity to have the information they need, and their questions answered, before we submit a planning application.

“We want to help support Bridgend on its net zero journey, and the production of green hydrogen as a low carbon source of fuel and heat would enable Bridgend Council and the region to lead the way in this agenda.”

Councillor John Spanswick, Cabinet Member for Communities at Bridgend County Borough Council, said:

“Hundreds of local residents attended the previous public event to find out more about the proposals, ask questions and pass on their thoughts and feedback. This latest event offers a fresh opportunity for people to come and receive new, up-to-date information and find out what the latest situation is. I hope that as many people as possible will take advantage of it.”
