HyBont Achieves Planning Permission and Hazardous Substance Consent for Green Hydrogen Project
The HyBont project, a pioneering green hydrogen initiative in South Wales, has reached two significant milestones, securing both Hazardous Substance Consent (HSC) in March 2025 and full planning permission in April 2025. These achievements pave the way for construction to begin later in 2025, with the facility expected to be operational in 2027.
Located at the Brynmenyn Industrial Estate, the HyBont facility will feature an electrolyser plant with an electrical capacity of approximately 7.5MWe. The plant is designed to produce between 500 and 850 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, partially powered by a 5.5 MWp Solar PV Farm at Bryncethin via a private wire connection.
The project is anticipated to create up to 100 temporary construction jobs over 2 years and 5 permanent operational roles, providing a boost to the local and national economy.
Gary Corbett, spokesperson for HyBont Limited, commented on the achievement:
“Securing both HSC and planning permission marks a pivotal moment for the HyBont project and for the region’s transition to clean energy. We are proud to be leading the way in green hydrogen production and look forward to delivering real benefits to the local community and industry.”
George Dodd, Senior Vice President of Marubeni Europower, added:
“This is a major step forward for the HyBont project and demonstrates our commitment to investing in innovative, sustainable energy solutions in the UK. We are excited to move into the next phase and work with our partners to bring this green hydrogen facility to life.”
HyBont is designed as a catalyst for innovation in the Welsh hydrogen sector. By integrating solar power with electrolysis technology, the project demonstrates a scalable model for clean hydrogen production. The hydrogen generated will be used locally, with a focus on decarbonising transport including public bus fleets and other local mobility solutions helping to reduce emissions and support Wales’ journey to net zero.
Marubeni Europower and Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions have been delivering workshops in local schools, aiming to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists and raise awareness of the benefits and opportunities of hydrogen technology.
The HyBont project is expected to play a key role in the decarbonisation of local industry and transport, supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions and fostering innovation in renewable energy.
